Predonico

High above the bottom of the Valle dell’Adige valley lies Predonico, ideal for long hikes and typical Törggele evenings

A well-developed mountain road leads from San Michele Appiano into the low mountain regions above the Adige Valley. Especially in summer, it is a bit cooler here. The panoramic view on the provincial capital of Bolzano and the mighty Dolomites in the background is particularly beautiful from here, holidays in this little village are dedicated to peace and relaxation.

In Predonico, far away from the main traffic routes in the valley basin, hiking and mountain biking are on the programme. The mixed forests on the slopes of Mt. Macaion extend around the houses and are criss-crossed by the Appiano High Route and other hiking possibilities. The area has a long history to tell: Remains of a late antique hilltop settlement and hill forts were found on the St. Vigilius Hill, prehistoric structures characterised by their walls made of stones or logs.

A shield boss and a spur, a strap-end and a horse brooch were found here in Predonico (Perdonig) during archeological excavation works. Today, the enchanting parish church of the village, the St. Vigilius and St. Ulrich Church, stands nearby. It was built in 1799 by Hieronymus von Vintschger, who came from a lower noble family from Appiano. However, remains of the walls indicate that a church had already stood on its site on the St. Vigilius Hill (Vigiliushügel) in the 6th century.
