A bridge leads from Oltretorrente directly to the centre of Ortisei in the Val Gardena with its popular shopping street
Only the Rio Gardena stream separates the main village of Ortisei from its hamlet of Oltretorrente (Überwasser) on the opposite bank. A bridge connects the two districts, meaning all the shopping and cultural attractions of Ortisei village are just a few minutes' walk away.
Oltretorrente, known as Sureghes in Ladin, is located right next to Ortisei and is often perceived as part of this municipality, but officially belongs to the municipality of Castelrotto, along with Bulla and Roncadizza. While the cable cars to the wide Secëda Meadows and the Rasciesa highland depart from the village centre of Ortisei, from Oltretorrente you can reach the opposite side.
This is where the valley station of the Alpe di Siusi Cable Car is located, one of two lifts that ascend to Europe's largest high alp. The second lift departs from Siusi allo Sciliar. Both the Alpe di Siusi and the Seceda-Rasciesa areas are popular hiking regions in summer and well-known ski resorts in winter, with pistes that are well connected due to their geographical proximity.
Oltretorrente also has its own sports facilities. The historic Setil ice rink is situated in a beautiful woodland setting. A hockey club was founded in Ortisei as early as 1927, at a time when few clubs played this winter sport: HC St. Ulrich was one of the first in Italy. Another leisure facility is the Mar Dolomit Val Gardena, with indoor and outdoor areas, an adventure slide, and a sauna area.
