The Monte Elmo skiing and hiking area, high above Versciaco, invites you to enjoy outdoor experiences in the Val Pusteria mountains
Directly above Versciaco (Vierschach) rises the Monte Elmo, one of the mountains in the Upper Val Pusteria that belong to the famous 3 Zinnen Dolomites Ski Resort. While up on its peak in summer, Olperl, a mysterious creature with large, luminous eyes, has his kingdom in Olperl's Nature Park, and the new Reinhold Messner Haus replaces the old mountain station of the cable car, in winter you will find pistes with guaranteed snow. A cross-border connection to the Thurntaler Skiing Area on the Austrian side, in East Tyrol, is planned for the coming years.
Versciaco, a component locality of San Candido, consists of Versciaco di Sopra and Versciaco di Sotto. Slightly above the village centre, the Parish Church of St. Magdalene is perched on one of the country's most beautiful church hills. It is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture that you can visit. The Rococo sculptor Veit Königer, who created important works such as the high altar in Graz Cathedral and sculptures in Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, also came from here.
Here in Versciaco, you can explore the mountains on foot and the floor of the Val Pusteria by bike. The Pusterbike Cycle Path runs directly through the village. This route, which can also be easily divided into stages, is part of the cycle network in South Tyrol that crosses the entire region.
The section in the Val Pusteria valley extends from San Candido to Fortezza, from where it continues towards the Brennero Pass or the main town of South Tyrol, Bolzano. The connection to local public transport is also good: Buses can take you to the surrounding villages and various destinations. In addition, the easternmost railway station in South Tyrol is located in Versciaco.
