The small hamlet of Elle: a panoramic spot on the slope above the Brunico basin and a starting point for hikes
Travelling from Mantana in the direction of the Val Badia, the slopes rise to the peaks of the Luson Mountains. These are known for their extensive high alpine pastures, such as the Luson Alp and the Rodengo Alp towards the Valle Isarco. Two hamlets belonging to San Lorenzo di Sebato also lie on these slopes: Onies and Elle. The hamlet, at an altitude of over 1,300 metres, is a quiet retreat - whether for a summer in the fresh air, for autumn days, or for tobogganing fun in deep winter.
The small village church watches over the few farmhouses and homes nestled between meadows and forests. It dates from 1483, is dedicated to Saints John and Paul, and formed the origin of the hamlet, which grew up around it. On the façade, you can spot an ornate sundial from 1618 AD.
With its with Gothic numerals it gives the little church its special charm. Elle lies on the mountain of the same name above the Brunico basin, opening up a wide view into the valley. In summer, hikes lead you through the cool forests to the Walder Hut and further up to the tree line.
Below the Cima Lasta, also called Giogo d'Asta, is the Croce di Elle viewpoint. The Cima Lasta itself is also a worthwhile destination that you can reach on foot, by mountain bike, or with snowshoes and touring skis. Your tobogganing adventure, however, starts right on your doorstep: One of the toboggan runs in the Val Pusteria leads three kilometres down from the Hosp Hut to Elle.
