On the western Monte Sole, where the Val di Mazia winds its way into the Oetztal Alps, lies Sluderno with its hamlets of Sluderno village and Spondigna. Above the village, Coira Castle is enthroned, the widely visible residence of the Counts of Trapp: When the flag is flying, they are present.
The well-preserved castle complex is open for visits during the warmer months and offers a glimpse into its world-famous armoury, the largest private collection of its kind. Every summer, the Medieval Knight Games South Tyrol take place on the meadows, with good views of Castel Coira: Fans of knights and castles should definitely put Sluderno on their list!
Sluderno village is also worth seeing. The Gothic St. Catherine's Church and the painted house façades tell of the eventful history of the Upper Val Venosta. The paths around the village lead through orchards and meadows to a 100-hectare biotope, which provides a safe habitat for endangered animal and plant species. At higher altitudes, wide panoramic views open up over the Val Venosta and the mostly snow-covered peaks of the Ortles Alps.
The hamlet of Spondigna, however, is located a few kilometres away on the valley floor of the Adige River. For further excursions, the Val Venosta Railway, which has a station in Sluderno, is a good option. As the municipality is well integrated into the Val Venosta cycle path network, cycle tours with a return journey by train are possible. A special feature for hikes and walks are the Sluderno Waalwege paths at the entrance to the Val di Mazia, also known a Matschertal.
Like many in the Val Venosta, these paths run alongside the old irrigation channels: the "Waale". This allows for shady walks along the watercourses during the warmer months. In winter, Sluderno is surrounded by the ski resorts of the Val Venosta. As a quieter alternative, the cross-country ski trails of the large, cross-border Venosta Nordic network invite you to explore.
