Passo dello Stelvio

The highest point in the municipality of Stelvio is also Italy’s highest mountain pass: the legendary Passo dello Stelvio

48 hairpin bends separate one hamlet from another: From Trafoi all'Ortles, the panoramic road climbs to the highest point in the municipal area of Stelvio, the Passo dello Stelvio, with the hamlet of Passo dello Stelvio (Stilfserjoch). The Tibet Hut is situated there in a scenic location. It was built in the Tibetan style and houses one of the highest wellness centres in the Alps.

However, the tarmacked pass is only bustling with activity in summer. In winter, the section up to the pass remains closed and transforms into a toboggan run which follows the asphalted road. The entire area has been protected as the Stelvio National Park since 1935. Once you've made it up the road, you'll find a high-alpine landscape with harsh conditions.

It's not uncommon for it to snow here at 2,757 metres, even in summer. Whether with or without snow flurries, skiers and snowboarders are active here from early summer until well into autumn. They usually find pistes with reliable snow conditions. In the summer of 2022, however, a glacial lake drew attention to the consequences of global warming and glacial melt, which are also affecting the renowned Passo dello Stelvio. Besides shops and places to eat and drink, the summit also features the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, a bank, car parks, and ski lifts.

Here you'll meet cyclists who have conquered the 48 hairpin bends under their own steam, motorcyclists for whom the Stelvio Pass is a key destination on their route before continuing to Bormio, and hikers who set off from the pass on the Ortles High Route towards Stelvio or finish their tour here on the Wormision Trail, an ancient connecting path.
