Spelonca

Spelonca in the Valle di Spelonca offers a cool summer escape in the Sarentino Alps high above Varna

From Varna village, a small road leads into the mountains. Here, the Valle di Scaleres with the village of Scaleres and the Valle di Spelonca with Spelonca (Spiluck) branch off. Both belong to the municipality of Varna. The third, uninhabited valley is the pristine Valle di Vallaga (Flaggertal), characterised by mountain forests, waterfalls and traditional alpine pastures.

The valley's name is particularly well-known because of the Forcella Vallaga Mountain Hut, which lies above Lake Vallaga and is a popular hiking destination. Spelonca is an ideal starting point for short and long mountain tours in the Sarentino Alps, with destinations such as the Monte Bersaglio, the Zirmait Hut, and the Passo della Spelonca. The aforementioned Monte Bersaglio, or Scheibenberg, is also known to mountain bikers: The trail there is considered one of the most beautiful and challenging in Bressanone. Spelonca can be reached on foot from Varna.

On the way, you can experience the simple beauty of the Valle di Spelonca. The hike ends back in Varna after about three and a half hours, with the return journey following the Rio di Spelonca stream. In the village itself, a few farms and houses are scattered between the Via Spelonca and the Via Erschbam roads. The charming, painted little church in the centre is dedicated to Saint Gall and looks more like a village chapel - services are still held here regularly.

Saint Gall is not often found in South Tyrol - he was an itinerant monk, missionary, and the founder of the Princely Abbey of St. Gallen in Switzerland. In the cold season, Spelonca transforms into a snowy idyll. From here, the Plose Skiing Area above Bressanone can be reached in an hour by car.
