The slopes of the 2,509 m high Mt Villandro descend to the Val Sarentino and to the Villandro alpine pastures.
In the eastern ridge of the Sarentino Alps the Monte di Villandro is located. In this area a nature walk dedicated to the mountain pine and several operated mountain huts, like the Gasser hut (1,744 m asl), the Mair in Plun hut (1,870 m asl) and the mountain tavern “Am Rinderplatz” (1,800 m asl) can be found. The Pine Theme Path (Latschenweg) offers interesting information about the mountain pines of the area.
The mountain, together with the Forcella Sarentina wind gap (2,460 m asl) and the more south located Cima dei Camosci peak (2,155 m asl), descends quite steeply to the Val Sarentino. On the other side, towards the Valle Isarco, it descends more gently to the Villandro alpine pastures, a popular hiking area.
Here the Dead Lake (Totensee, in German) and the little church called “Totenkirchl” (Dead Chapel) are located. A way of the cross proceeds up to this pilgrimage site at 2,186 m asl, starting at the Gasser mountain hut near Villandro. From there it takes another 10 minutes to the Dead Lake and then 1 hour to the main summit of Mt Villandro with its cross. The chapel, however, is also a popular destination for snowshoe hikers in winter.
