Dolomites UNESCO Info Point

The Dolomites UNESCO Info Point In Zannes in the Val di Funes valley tells the 270 million year history of the “Pale Mountains”

You can experience 270 million years in fast motion at the Info Point of the Dolomites. It is situated at the head of the valley, more precisely at the Malga Zannes parking site for hikers and represents the second information point after the Puez-Odle Visitor Centre in Santa Maddalena di Funes. Once there was a tropical sea here with numerous atolls: The area where the world-famous mountains rise today was a large warm sea basin. Only when the African continent slowly began to drift towards Europe the actual folding of the Dolomites, the "Pale Mountains", began.

This had already been prepared by various phenomena: Volcanoes erupted, and buried and changed the existing reefs. In the Ladinian period, 236 million years ago, the volcanic activity ended and a vast coastal plain was formed. 228 million years ago, the first dinosaurs settled here... you can find out what happened next at the Dolomites UNESCO Info Point: There is plenty to wonder and learn about in the new building, which is modelled on the Odle Peaks. The exhibition and the mountains were also incorporated into the interior design by Arch. Christa Mair.
