Larch Trail in San Cassiano

A nature trail near San Cassiano (St. Kassian) combines an easy walk with wonderful impressions of the changing natural landscape. It is particularly impressive in autumn. As snow can already fall at higher altitudes in late autumn, walks are limited to the valley floor, which is nestled within a beautiful mountain setting in Alta Badia. We start our tour, which takes just under two hours, directly in the village centre of San Cassiano.

We follow trail no. 15 to the Larjëi farm, then continue on trail no. 15A, which takes us to the hamlet of Rü. There, between two fences, the actual educational trail begins, leading through the meadows to the Rüdeferia farm. The path ascends slightly at first, followed by a pleasant descent lasting around an hour. Traditional elements such as alpine fences and dry stone walls line the path, while information boards explain the geological and faunistic features of the region.

Here, framed by the rocky giants of the Dolomites, you find yourself at the edge of the Puez-Odle Nature Park - the trail itself was created by the Office for Nature Parks. Upon arriving at the Rüdeferia farm, we admire the restored and now fully functional water mill.

Afterwards, we return to the village along the same path under the October sun. Those who are in the mood for a bit more nature can add a visit to the Museum Ladin Ursus ladinicus, which is dedicated to the cave bear of Alta Badia that lived during the interglacial period.
