As the starting point for this autumn hike, we choose the village of Ponte Gardena in the Valle Isarco, at the entrance to the Val Gardena. From there, path no. 35 takes us up the valley slope towards Laion and on to Novale di Laion. Through the woods and across meadows, passing old farms, we reach the hamlet with its 15th-century church dedicated to St. Catherine.
It is already lunchtime, and here in Novale di Laion, there are as many as seven farm inns serving the traditional Toerggele meals in autumn. Path no. 35 continues up to the Val Gardena road. We walk further until we reach the Vogelweider Farm, where the minnesinger Walther von der Vogelweide was presumably born around 1170 AD. After looking around the historic building - information boards detail its history - we walk the short distance back to the Val Gardena road.
We follow this road up the valley for about 100 metres, where the path to Albions branches off to the right. An autumnal deciduous forest, green meadows and views across the Valle Isarco valley characterise the remainder of the hike.
From Albions, path no. 5 leads down to Chiusa. The beautiful medieval town in the Valle Isarco is definitely worth a visit. The train then brings us from Chiusa back to our starting point in Ponte Gardena in six minutes (alternatively, bus route 346 takes 16 minutes).
