La Val, South Tyrol’s first certified hiking village, is the starting point for mountain tours in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park
The holiday village of La Valle is situated in a quiet location in the La Val Valley, at the foot of Mt. Armentara and the mighty Sasso di Santa Croce. Here, people still live in harmony with nature: Alongside La Valle Vecchia, the historic part of the village, whose 14th-century church tower is considered the last remnant of the former church, lies the centre of St. Genesius.
Around, on the slopes of the Val Badia, small hamlets of farmhouses known as Viles are scattered. La Valle (Wengen) is a hiking village par excellence: A few years ago, the locality was the first in South Tyrol to be certified as a "Hiking Village".
Today, five certified trails lead into the surrounding mountains and the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, including the "Tru di Pra" mountain trail, which takes you up to the protected Armentara Meadows. Each year at the beginning of summer, 197 plant species blossom here. For a walk, on the other hand, the "Memento vivere" contemplation trail from the village centre to the little St. Barbara Church, called Santa Berbura in Ladin, is suitable.
It stands, somewhat secluded yet in a magnificent panoramic position, on a hill above La Valle. Its interior murals also make it a valued destination for art and culture enthusiasts. When the first snow covers the landscape in late autumn, it is not long before the surrounding ski areas open their slopes. These include the Alta Badia Skiing Area as well as the famous Plan de Corones.
The Armentara Meadows, on the other hand, attract cross-country skiers in the cold months, who can choose from several trails in the Armentara cross-country skiing area. The 1.6-kilometre-long Armentara-La Cialciara toboggan run also starts there, a lovely destination for a family outing.
