Gaveis on the Merano High Route lies amidst meadows and woods below Mt. Guardia Alta and the Cima Muta
Situated above Caines, a few farms stand amidst a wonderfully peaceful natural landscape. Higher up, the peaks of Mt. Guardia Alta, the Cima Muta, the Picco Ivigna, and the Punta Cervina rise majestically. The latter peak, the Punta Cervina, is a well-known hiking and flying area accessible from the Val Passiria. The Gaveis (Gfeis) launch site is familiar to paragliders.
The few farms and houses of Gaveis are located at 1,278 metres above sea level, making it ideal for refreshing summer mornings and snowy winter days. Near Gaveis, the Val Sopranes branches off from the Passiria Valley and leads deep into the Texel Group, home to the Sopranes Lakes, a high-alpine lake plateau. You can explore ten lakes during a mountain tour lasting several hours. Hikes to the Longfall inn below the lakes, the Hahnenkamm Hut, and the Obisell Huts are also excellent options in this region - the lower hut is not managed, while the upper one features a small menu.
Below Gaveis run the Waalwege paths of Caines and Rifiano, as well as the Merano High Route. This long-distance hike through the Texel Group shows you the Val Passiria over two daily stages. One stage covers the sunny slopes of the valley, the other explores the alpine heights of the Petrarca all'Altissima Mountain Hut (Stettiner Hütte) in the Upper Val Passiria and the Passo Gelato, which forms the transition between the Val Passiria and the Val di Fosse in the Val Senales.
In winter, you will find the Merano 2000 Skiing Area further down the valley, situated above the spa town of Merano. Heading deeper into the valley brings you to the Plan Passiria Ski Resort. In between these locations, San Martino in Passiria provides an ice rink.
