San Candido village

On the edge of San Candido, the lifts take you up the Rocca dei Baranci mountain with its Fun Bob and the realm of Gigante Baranci

Whether travelling through the Upper Val Pusteria on four wheels along the state road, on two wheels on the Pusterbike Cycle Path or by the Val Pusteria Railway, which stops here, you will pass one of the main villages of the Upper Pusteria Valley holiday region: San Candido. The centre of the market town, San Candido village (Innichen Dorf), extends to the right of the Drava River up to the foothills of the mighty Rocca dei Baranci, called Haunold, in German. The centre welcomes you with well-kept historic houses and an inviting, traffic-calmed pedestrian zone.

If you are interested in culture, you will also find plenty to see here, as many buildings are steeped in history. From the central Piazza del Magistrato square, you can quickly reach the historic "Ausserkirchl", the Holy Sepulchre Church. This small church is a special testament to baroque folk piety, with valuable figures inside. Then there is the San Candido Monastery, the oldest in Tyrol, with its impressive 8th-century collegiate church. The associated MIK Museum im Kapitel, which is open during the summer months, gives you a good insight into the region's past.

On clear summer days, the Rocca dei Baranci stands out against the blue sky on the edge of the village. The mountain is very popular with families, as the lifts take you directly up from the village. High above, Gigante Baranci, a giant, awaits in his fabled realm, where there are also tangible attractions to discover, such as themed trails and a summer toboggan run, the Fun Bob.

In winter, Mt. Rocca dei Baranci is one of the mountains that make up the 3 Zinnen Dolomites Ski Resort. At lower altitudes, the options are complemented by 200 kilometres of cross-country ski trails in the Sesto Dolomites and two toboggan runs, including the one near Bagni di San Candido.
