Coldrano Castle is one of South Tyrol’s few Renaissance buildings, which today hosts further education courses
A long time ago, gold pieces are said to have been found beneath the remains of a farmhouse - so the legend begins that tells how Coldrano (Goldrain) got its name. It is more likely that the name comes from the Latin word "colurona", meaning "landscape with many hazelnut bushes". Today, Coldrano lies nestled in orchards at the foot of the Monte Sole in the Val Venosta.
The mild climate and many hours of sunshine allow Val Venosta apricots, grapes, and apples to thrive. The village extends along both banks of the Adige River, which flows through its centre. By the bridge over the river is the "Platzl", the village square, with its long-established inn and surrounding shops. Among them stand several venerable buildings such as Coldrano Castle, one of the oldest structures in the village, and the Schanzen courthouse.
The meadow next to it is still called Galgenwiese (Gallows Meadow). You can visit the Gothic St. Anna Chapel and the St. Lucius Church. Two residences produce high-quality products: Monte Sant'Anna Castle is dedicated to wine, and the "Kräuterschlössl" focuses on herb cultivation.
The Monte Sole - the Sun Mountain - is suitable for tours through a barren landscape, most of which is protected. Here, panoramic hikes lead through a unique steppe vegetation. In the village below, cyclists get on and off at the Coldrano-Martello station, using the Val Venosta Railway service for bicycle transport. In winter, the nearby Martello Valley becomes a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts, with ski tours, toboggan runs, and cross-country ski trails.
