Burgusio

The Watles adventure mountain with its play lake and ski slopes rises above the village of Burgusio and the Monte Maria Monastery

On the western side of the Val Venosta, the houses of Burgusio stand at more than 1,200 m a.s.l. It is a village on the slopes of Mt. Watles with an information office, its own fire brigade, small shops and one of the Gault Millau-awarded restaurants in South Tyrol. Where the main village of Malles has five church towers, Burgusio still has impressive four: those of the Holy Cross Chapel, the St. Michael's Church, the Church of St. Nicholas and the Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception. When you walk through the picturesque centre, you will notice beautiful frescoes on the houses.

Two mighty buildings watch over the village: Castello del Principe, the Prince's Castle, built by the bishops of Coira, and the white building complex on the hillside. It is the highest Benedictine Abbey of Europe, the honourable Monte Maria Monastery. As one of the cultural highlights in the Upper Val Venosta, it also offers a magnificent view on the valley. The baroque building hides a Romanesque crypt from the 12th century at its core, whose frescoes fascinate every visitor. Its "ora et labora" Monastery Museum is also accessible and tells of everyday life in the convent.

With such a rich history, also nature deserves attention, which has richly endowed Burgusio (Burgeis) and the surroundings. That shouldn't be difficult, mountains and meadows as far as the eye can see. Burgusio is situated at the foot of Mount Watles, which is an attractive destination at any time of the year: In summer, the Watles Adventure Lake offers a welcome refreshment for families, in autumn the hike to the Laghi del Prete lakes is considered a special tip, and in winter the ski slopes open here. In the valley, the Val Venosta Cycle Path runs through the village.
