Hike to the anemone blossom in the Val di Roia

After a long winter period in the Val Roia at 2,000 m a.s.l., the European pasque flowers welcome the spring season

The hamlet of Roia (Rojen) in the eponymous valley is one of the highest located permanent settlements of the Alpine area. Here, only a stone's throw from lake Resia under the mountain slopes stretching up to the Swiss border, spring just draws in at the beginning of May, but is highly impressive. From Resia at the lakeside, you can reach the starting point by car, following the signposts "Schöneben" and "Rojen". The signpost "Reschner Alm" (Resia Mountain Hut) along the road points at a bridge, right behind there is a little parking space.

This is where our walk starts towards north, at the first junction we stick to the left, until we reach the singpost "Kalchwaldhütte", (Kalch Mountain Hut, no. 7). Steadily the way up, we can soon see Lake Resia and in the background the Oetztal Alps. Past the mentioned wooden hut, the path proceeds towards Mt. Innerer Nockenkopf, short after we reach bleak larch slopes, covered by European pasque flowers. It is a highly striking spectacle, as this flower has been extinct in great parts of the Alps, and can hardly be admired in an amount like this.

We almost reached 2,200 m now and the path continues towards south, up to the junction where start descending towards Roia. In the little hamlet, there is also a mountain tavern, where we decide to make a stop. We continue on the path towards the interior and discover meadows full of crocuses, cowslips and kingcups. Walking down along the road, we reach our starting point.
