Easy forest and meadow hike from Vandoies up to Maranza - especially beautiful in spring
Image gallery: Hike to the Stöcklhuber farm and to Maranza
The starting point for the hike to the Söcklhuber farm and to Maranza is Vandoies di Sotto in the lower Val Pusteria. From the village centre, we follow the '"Rundweg Bergl" signpost. This path first leads us west along the edge of the forest, before curving right and continuing uphill.
After about 40 minutes, we reach the meadows at the entrance to the Val di Fundres valley. We now follow the signpost for Maranza (no. 11). The path leads upwards across the slope directly to the hamlet of Serga. Alternatively, you can follow the paved mountain road, which has almost no traffic. Passing old farmhouses, we arrive at the Stöcklhuber farm.
Here stands the Stöcklhuberstöckl, a small chapel. Now we continue following path no. 11 towards the west. It runs mostly flat with a few short climbs, continuing until Maranza. Now, in the early days of May, the meadows of Maranza (Meransen) are in full bloom.
To save ourselves the nearly eight-kilometre walk down from Maranza to Vandoies, we take the Rio di Pusteria-Maranza Cable Car (or alternatively, the bus) down to Rio di Pusteria. From there, we return to the Vandoies railway station in five minutes using the Val Pusteria Railway.
