Hike to Lake Sassalbo

This hike starting in Certosa in the Val Senales leads to an impressive and clear mountain lake

The starting point for this hike is the small village of Certosa in the Val Senales, located at 1,327 metres above sea level. The route to the Klosteralm, or Malga del Convento - literally the "mountain hut of the monastery" - goes upwards along path no. 23 through a magnificent larch forest. After about two hours, you reach the hut at an altitude of 2,154 metres.

It is an ideal place to stop for a break and something to eat - it once belonged to the Carthusian monks, whose "Allerengelsberg" Monastery can still be visited down in the valley today.

Here on the Malga del Convento, the monks used to graze their cattle and source their dairy products. This was important, as they were not allowed to eat meat. The route then continues upwards, following marker no. 23. The path is relatively easy to walk, apart from one section just below Lake Sassalbo. Once you reach the viewpoint, you can see the lovely Lake Sassalbo at an altitude of 2,460 metres. It sits nestled between high rocks, creating an inspiring sight.

You can begin the descent along the same path or across the saddle behind the Cima della Tavola peak. In both cases, the return route leads back to the mountain hut, and from there, it is a gentle walk down. We arrive back at our starting point after the five-hour hike.
