High above the Tires Valley, in the municipality of Fié allo Sciliar, lies the hamlet of Santa Caterina (St. Kathrein). At its centre stands the small church that gives the hamlet its name, surrounded by farmsteads scattered across the hillside at an altitude of around 900 metres.
The Fié Pond is also easy to reach from here. The Church of St. Catherine was first documented in the 13th century, but the area was settled millennia earlier. The reasons for this were likely the fertile soil and the south-facing terrain. It is dedicated to Saint Catherine, but it was originally consecrated to Saint Michael. The name of the neighbouring Michaeler Farm is a reminder of this. On the southern wall, a canopy and a wall once protected a resting place for hikers and pilgrims.
The old long-distance trail connecting Bolzano with the Val di Fassa once passed through here. In both summer and winter, the Siusi Alp on one side and the Catinaccio Group on the other are popular destinations: Thanks to its proximity to peaks such as the Monte Cavone and the Sciliar, Santa Caterina is a popular starting point for hiking and climbing tours.
In winter, the area attracts visitors with the Alpe di Siusi Skiing Area - the high plateau is also known for its cross-country ski trails - and the Carezza Dolomites Ski Area. Both are quickly accessible from Santa Caterina di Fiè. Furthermore, the Aica di Fié Farm Trail starts or ends in Santa Caterina. It leads you on a route of almost 10 kilometres from Castel Presule to the Church of St. Catherine, right through the varied landscape at the foot of the Sciliar.
