Dobbiaco village

From above, the village looks like something from a picture book, protected by the mighty peaks of the Sesto and Braies Dolomites

Dobbiaco village (Toblach Dorf) is composed of Old and New Dobbiaco and is the main village of the municipality. "It is wonderful here and is sure to restore body and soul..." as Gustav Mahler noted over a century ago. The green roof of the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist peeks out from between the houses, with Dobbiaco Castle, also called Herbstenburg, enthroned nearby. Below the Dobbiaco plain, along the Val Pusteria road, lies New Dobbiaco with its Grand Hotel.

This Grand Hotel, once a luxury hotel and now an important cultural centre, hosts numerous events and is also home to the Three Peaks Nature Park Visitor Centre. Behind the building, the forest begins, featuring the Dobbiaco Wood Wonder World, a nature playground for children. Right next to it is the train station, a hub for anyone wanting to go without a car for a few days. Here, cyclists get off the Val Pusteria line trains with their bikes, and hikers start their circular tour of the Three Peaks of Lavaredo by taking the bus shuttle to the Auronzo Hut.

There is also plenty to discover in Dobbiaco for active leisure: Bouldering in the Nordic Arena, climbing at Lake Landro, or walking around Lake Dobbiaco are among the highlights for a short break. Swans glide on the water, laughter can be heard from the pedal boats, and the lake sparkles in the sun - this is how you enjoy summer in Dobbiaco.

In winter, too, when the cross-country ski tracks around the Nordic Arena and the slopes at the Rienza Ski Center open, there are two special attractions: in December, a visit to the Christmas in the Dolomites, and in January, a view from a hot-air balloon during the Dolomiti Balloon Festival.
