The Valles high valley delights hikers and winter sports fans with the Fane Alpine Village and the Steinermandl viewing platform
Above Rio di Pusteria, the Valle di Valles high valley branches off into the Fundres Mountains. Its extensive forests and a landscape ideal for cattle breeding led to the establishment of the first traditional Alpine farms here as early as the 13th century. Over time, alongside cattle breeding and cheese production, tourism has developed into an important economic sector. A special point of interest is the Fane Alpine Village, an unspoilt mountain hamlet with a unique atmosphere. The origins of this "most beautiful alpine village in South Tyrol" date back to the Middle Ages.
Today, you can reach it via the South Tyrolean Milk Path: Appropriately, the South Tyrolean Milk Festival was also held here for many years. Some of the huts, which provide food and drink, are also open in winter and are perfect for a stop before sledging back down into the valley.
For mountain enthusiasts, hikes to the Bressanone Mountain Hut, tours to Mt. Picco della Croce, or treks along the Fundres High Route are recommended. The Marmo, or Marble Lake is also a worthwhile destination. The Valles Loop Trail is more leisurely, a family-friendly walk through the area surrounding Valles (Vals). In winter, the high valley shows a different side: The Gitschberg Jochtal hiking area, with its adventure park, transforms into a ski resort with a ski school.
The lifts start at the northern edge of Valles. The village centre itself consists of a primary school and the Parish Church of Saint Andrew, which has watched over the houses, farms and modern-day accommodation providers for centuries. An ice rink and a five-kilometre circular cross-country ski trail through wide meadows and snow-covered forests complete the winter leisure facilities.
