Ski tour to Mount Picco della Croce

The 3,132 m high Mt. Picco della Croce is one of the main peaks of the Fundres Mountains in the Zillertal Alps

Starting point for this spring ski tour (best after a clear and cold night in late spring) is the parking space of the Fane Alpine Village (Fane Alm, 1,697 m a.s.l.) in Valles. First we follow the well-beaten trail stretching past the Fane Alpine Village towards the head of the valley. Soon we reach the so-called "Klamm" (gorge), considered at high avalanche risk. If you do this tour in late spring, you might need to carry your skis on your rucksack up to this point. At the junction to the Labeseben Mountain Hut (Labeseben Alm) we take the right towards the Bressanone Mountain Hut and continue walking the way up until we reach this mountain hut (2,307 m a.s.l.).

After a short break we continue, following the course of the valley behind the mountain hut. In a wide bend this valley takes us to a steeper slope that is overcome in zigzag. By the way, this is where snow fields are preserved up to high summer months. Once this slope is overcome, we reach the Val di Fumo Ridge (Rauhtaljoch, 2,808 m a.s.l.), from where we can enjoy a great view on Mt. Punta Bianca and other high peaks. We proceed towards right, heading for the peak of Mt. Picco della Croce (Wilde Kreuzspitze, 3,132 m a.s.l.), the ascent is getting steeper and steeper.

Going zigzag we approach the highest point, the last metres need to be walked on foot. The double peak of Mt. Picco della Croce provides a fabulous view of the Zillertal Alps. After a break we ski down the southern flank of the mountain, that is to say the way we walked up. It is of great importance to ski down early in the morning. Skiing down the upper part of this tour is real fun thanks to the great conditions. Relatively challenging tour, ideal for experienced back-country skiers. Tour for the spring season, advisable only after a cold and clear night. Check the avalanche risks in the so-called "Klamm". Great panoramic peak and in case of good conditions great for skiing. Absolutely secure conditions are indispensable!
