The Picco della Croce is one of the highest peaks in the surroundings of Bressanone and thus a popular hiking destination. Well marked paths start at the Vipiteno al Picco della Croce mountain hut (2,344 m asl) in Borgone in the Val di Vizze, and at the Bressanone mountain hut (2,307 m asl) in the Val di Valles and end on the 3,135 m high top of the mountain.
Along the path from Borgone to the Vipiteno al Picco della Croce mountain hut there’s a protected natural monument, a 10 m wide spring with stalactites and stalagmites. The path which starts at the Bressanone mountain hut is steeper, but shorter and proceeds along a high path, the Alta Via di Fundres. The cross on the summit of the mountain has been established on the south east summit (3,125 m asl).
Once reached the top of the mountain you can look down on Lake Selvaggio, a small but mighty moutain lake, glimmering in the sun. Amazing! A two-day trip with overnight stay in the Bressanone mountain hut is possible by combining the tour to the Picco della Croce with the hike to the Cima di Valmala (3,022 m asl).
