One of the most beautiful themed trails in South Tyrol is the almost 8 km long “Guggnweg” between San Genesio and Meltina/Tschaufen.

A pleasant theme trail starts in the village centre of San Genesio and leads through the meadows and larch forests of the Salto plateau above Bolzano. Almost 8 km long, the trail invites you to a journey of discovery with numerous play stations and information boards: They tell about the special features of the area, such as the larch meadows, the Haflinger horses and the Earth Pyramids. Wooden horse-drawn carriages are ideal for climbing, huge horse heads seem to watch the magnificent landscape, and rest stops invite to a picnic.
The hike is particularly interesting in autumn, when the larch meadows turn orange and golden, while Haflingers and cows still graze in the pastures in between. The "Guggnweg" is also known as the Tschaufen Theme Trail, as it leads through this historic area on the Salto. In the Middle Ages, the Tschaufen near Meltina was the hunting lodge of the Lords of Maultasch, and from 1907 Haflingers were bred here. Behind the house, a burial mound was discovered that dates back to 500 AD. However, the trail can also be walked in the opposite direction from Meltina/Tschaufen. Walking time: approx. 2.5 hours.
