Hike to the St. Peter Church and Tanas

This circular walk takes us to historic places on the Monte Sole in the Val Venosta valley, above Lasa

Starting point and final destination of this circular hike is the village of Oris (Eyrs) near Lasa in the Val Venosta valley. From the parish church we follow the road to the mountain and the marker no. 21A towards Mt. Montaccio (Madatschknott). Past a farm we walk through the forest, the path becomes a trail and winds up the slope in curves. At a fork in the trail we take the path 21B towards San Pietro (St. Peter). This leads us up to the same-named church, which is situated on a lonely hill. There was already a St. Peter Church in the 14th century, but it was destroyed by a mudslide and a new church was built in 1513.

But also this church became a victim of the forces of nature and still today the ruins of this second chapel can be seen from the hiking trail. The present church dates back to the 18th century and served the inhabitants of Tanas as a parish church until 1895. The next stage leads us on path no. 23 to Tanas. The mountain village at about 1,450 m a.s.l. is surrounded by fields and meadows. Passing old houses we reach the Sacred Heart Church at the western edge of the village.

Above the village, the Paflur tavern is located, the only stop for refreshments nearby. The view on the Ortles Alps with the mighty Croda di Cengles is impressive. For the descent we choose an easier path: Route no. 25 is a forest road which leads directly down to Oris again.
