Welsperg Castle, the oldest castle complex in the upper part of the Val Pusteria, watches over Monguelfo and its sunny terrace, Tesido
Monguelfo-Tesido lies at the entrance to the Casies Valley and is an ideal place for a peaceful stay. Visitors here appreciate the proximity to the Plan de Corones and the 3 Zinnen Dolomites region, the tranquillity of the unspoilt Val Casies, and the well-known Alpe di Tesido. The municipality extends from the main village of Monguelfo on the valley floor towards the Upper Val Pusteria, to the Valdaora Reservoir, and to the Rio di Braies.
The hamlets of Novale, Riva di Sotto, and Prati are spread across the slopes, while Tesido, the second largest village, is perched on a sunny terrace above. Here, on the western slope of the Montecosta mountain, also known as Eggerberg, Welsperg Castle majestically watches over the area.
The oldest castle complex in the upper part of the Val Pusteria is now a popular attraction and cultural centre, where concerts and festivals take place in the summer. Monguelfo-Tesido is also an ideal starting point for hikes: The most popular tours include the demanding hike to the Monte Lute mountain and the leisurely walk along the Tesido Legend Path. The village appears early in its history, first for its prehistoric hillfort, then for the Lords of Welsperg and artists such as Simon von Taisten and Paul Troger, who created important works of art in the Late Gothic and Baroque periods.
In addition to hiking, you can enjoy the Pusterbike Cycle Path or, in summer, the panoramic outdoor pool in Monguelfo-Tesido. In spring and autumn, you will find a special tranquillity here, away from the high seasons. Winter offers experiences for the whole family, such as on the Malga di Tesido toboggan run, and peaceful moments on the cross-country ski trails in the Val Casies.
Those looking for more action can have fun on the slopes of the Plan de Corones above Valdaora or in the 3 Zinnen Dolomites Ski Resort between Dobbiaco, Braies, San Candido, and Sesto.
