The high-altitude health resort of Solda, surrounded by South Tyrol’s highest peaks, is impressively situated at the head of the Solda Valley
The Monte Zebrù, the Gran Zebrù and Mt. Ortles tower as glaciated peaks almost 4,000 metres into the sky at the end of the Solda Valley. Against this imposing mountain backdrop lies a holiday resort where a jacket is often useful, even in summer: Solda (Sulden), in the Stelvio National Park. The village is a climatic high-altitude health resort at 1,900 metres. Its special location attracted pioneers of mountaineering and winter sports to this remote part of South Tyrol from early on.
Three small lakes and the Rio Solda shape the character of the elongated village. At its entrance, the MMM Ortles awaits you, formerly known as the Alpine Curiosa Museum and part of Reinhold Messner's museum project. Next to it, you will find his "Yak & Yeti" restaurant. Tibetan yaks graze on the surrounding pastures. During the traditional yak drive at the end of June, they are driven from the valley station of the Solda Cable Car to the Madriccio pastures.
Two more museums are located closer to the village centre: the Flohhäuschen (Flea House), a tiny room with an exhibition, and the Museum of the Ortles Region in the primary school. On the other side of the Rio Solda, the Old and New Parish Churches stand majestically. At the southern end of the village, which also marks the head of the Valle di Solda, you will find attractive excursion destinations for families such as the Solda Bear Bath and the NATURAronda adventure trail.
From there, the lifts take you to the hiking paths starting from the Città di Milano Hut in summer, and in winter to the Solda Skiing Area. Very well-groomed pistes and cosy ski huts characterise it. Here, the winter season starts earlier and ends later than in many other winter sports resorts. A high-altitude cross-country ski trail is available for cross-country skiers, and tobogganers can use the run from the Pulpito to the cable car, which is regularly floodlit as a night toboggan run.
