Rastenbach Gorge in Caldaro

This wild romantic biotope with waterfalls and typical vegetation of a gorge is a popular destination in Caldaro

A hike across the fascinating gorge, which lies hidden in the Castelvecchio Forest near the hamlet of Castelvecchio at Caldaro, is a real adventure both for adults and children. The paths no. 1 and 13 take you across the wild romantic Rastenbachklamm, as it is called in German, where you have to overcome steps, bridges and waterfalls. We recommend you to wear sturdy shoes!

The Peace Trail with its seven stations takes from the sports area of Sant'Antonio through the Rastenbach Gorge to Lake Caldaro, and also the cicular hike Nussental and Castelvecchio leads past the gorge. Particularly in summer there is always an enjoyable cool breeze, furthermore there is a fabulous vegetation down there. Even bats such as the greater mouse-eared bat live in the Rastenbach Gorge, which is why it has been placed under protection: The first secured bat cave of the region is located here, a cave with fence which denies access to people.

Something about the history: From the 15th to the 17th century, the area of Castelvecchio has been mined and for this reason it has also been populated very early. The St. Peter's Basilica and its sacrificial altar, which is situated on the path to the gorge, can be found in this forest. It represents presumably the oldest church in South Tyrol and one of the most ancient sacred buildings throughout Tyrol, dating back to the period between the 4th and the 6th century AD.
