Autumnal hike to the Monte di Silandro

At the Monte Sole mountain near Silandro, a golden autumn day can be splendidly spent during an easy circular walk to Monte di Silandro and along a Waalweg path

Our starting point is the traffic-calmed village centre of Silandro (Schlanders). We walk uphill to the Via Karl Schönherr road where we follow the marker no. 7 towards Monte di Silandro (Schlandersberg). The path proceeds uphill to the entrance of the Schlandraun Valley and further uphill across the dry slope to Monte di Silandro.

Along the narrow path we have a gorgeous view on little waterfalls and the valley. After about one hour, we have managed the 350 m in altitude up to Monte di Silandro. The little hamlet at the slope above the Schlandraun Valley was built around Schlandersberg Castle, a gorgeous residence from the 13th century. In former times the castle was in the possession of the Counts of Montalbano, today it is in private hands. The Fisolguthof farm is ideal to take a break before we carry on walking. We follow the marker towards the Ilzwaal Waalweg Path which first leads us into the gorge of the Schlandraun Valley and then proceeds along the sunny slope slightly downhill.

We decide to make a side trip to the St. Giles Chapel, a sight above Corces with beautiful ancient frescoes. Especially the fresco of Saint Christopher on the southern external wall is well preserved. With a beautiful view across the valley we walk through chestnut groves down to Silandro again, where our circular tour ends.
