Hike to the viewpoint of San Martino al Monte

This easy walk along the Val Venosta High Route takes you along the sunny slopes above Laces.

Laces (Latsch) in the Val Venosta valley is the starting point of our little walk today. By funicular we reach the village of San Martino al Monte (St. Martin im Kofel), located on a steep slope at 1,740 m a.s.l. As the weather forecast is not too good for today, we decide to do a relatively short tour. From San Martino al Monte we take the path no. 2 ("Vinschger Höhenweg", Val Venosta High Route) towards east. The first stage is asphalted, then it proceeds on a wide forested trail.

The sun-drenched slope along which we walk is a little paradise with Alpine flowers that also attracts a large number of butterflies. Also impressive is the panoramic view on the valley, as well as on Martello up to the peak so of the Ortles Alps. After less than one hour of walking, short before reaching the tavern of Platzair, a path turns off to the so-called "Dolomitenblick" viewpoint. Only a short stage is to be considered very steep, afterwards walking becomes more easy again.

Soon we reach the Dolomitenblick (literally: view to the Dolomites), a viewpoint in the middle of meadows, equipped with benches and tables, ideal for a picnic, and a great place for enjoying the view on the mountains. But what's that? Where we expect to be impressive mountains, there is only fog and clouds. What a pity. So we decide to head for our starting point by taking the paths no. 1B and 6. Thunder and lightning make us hurry up, and about 100 m before reaching the mountain station, rain starts falling, but we made it.
