Mountain tour to the Punta Matatz peak

Our summit hike on this September day aims for the 2,179-metre-high Punta Matatz. This peak provides extensive views stretching from the Zillertal Alps to the Ortles Alps and Brenta Dolomites. The walk starts gently from the car park above Ulfas near Moso in Passiria.

Here we follow the broad forest track up to the lower Ulfas Mountain Hut (Ulfaser Alm), where the actual summit climb begins. A moderately easy mountain path leads up steps through forest and heathland towards the tree line (no. 2B). We finally reach the eastern ridge of the Texel Group, with less than 200 metres of elevation gain remaining to the summit cross.

Although the weather is not entirely cooperative, the view is expansive. To the north stand the Oetztal, Stubai, and Zillertal Alps. To the south-east lie the Sarentino Alps, while to the south-west we can see the Trentino mountains, the Mendola Ridge, the Brenta Dolomites, the Monte Luco peaks, and the Ortles Alps. You can also look down into the valley from here, seeing from the Passo del Rombo to Stulles and from the Passo di Monte Giovo to San Leonardo and San Martino.

We return along the same general route, though we shorten the descent via the Schartalm Hut. Slightly further down, at the Ulfas Hut, we stop before taking the forest track back to Ulfas.

The Punta Matatz (Matatzspitze) is a small summit, but its position high above the valley certainly provides that satisfying feeling of reaching the top and surveying the surrounding area. The peak takes its name from the hamlet of Montaccio (Matatz) located below.
