Hike to Mt. Punta Livi

At 3,352 metres, the Punta Livi in the Val Martello is a rewarding mountain tour in the heart of the Stelvio National Park

On a fine July day, our starting point for this challenging tour is the car park at Lake Gioveretto in Martello di Dentro. To begin, we follow path no. 10 steeply upwards through the forest to the well-known Livi Hut (Lyfi Alm). It sits at an altitude of 2,165 metres and serves traditional rustic cuisine like dumplings, sweet shredded pancakes, mutton dishes, and apple strudel.

After the hut, we leave the forest behind and reach the Dosso di Peder - Val Peder fork. Next, we cross the meadows by the Rio Livi stream, which lead through the wide Livi Valley. The Dosso di Livi, standing at 2,851 metres, towers ahead. We bypass it on the left, and the well-marked path becomes rocky and steep. Two lakes come into view, nestled in the basin between Cima di Peder di Fuori and Punta Livi. The final 400 metres of elevation gain to the summit are quite demanding.

The trail leads over loose boulders and scree fields. Once we reach the summit of the Punta Livi at 3,352 metres, we are rewarded with magnificent views across the three-thousand-metre peaks of the Stelvio National Park. In winter, this peak is a wonderful destination for a ski tour.

The view extends to the massive glaciers of the Ortles Alps, down into the lower Val Venosta, and all the way to the main chain of the Alps. By the way, the hikers' car park at Lake Gioveretto is also the starting point for an alternative, shorter and easier hike to Mt. Dosso di Peder.
