A pleasant valley hike to a small mountain hut, set in a landscape shaped by nature

On this August day, we set out for a few hours of walking in the upper Valle Aurina towards an attractive mountain hut. Our starting point is located right where the road ends in Casere, which also hosts the bus stop and the visitor centre for the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park.
At the beginning of this nearly four-hour round trip, we pass the Holy Spirit Pilgrimage Church. This high-altitude sanctuary is surrounded by alpine meadows, woods, and the peaks of the main Alpine ridge. At the nearby "Schliefstein", you can supposedly squeeze through a narrow gap between rocks to leave your sins behind. The route is straightforward - it is impossible to get lost.
Signs for path no. 13 guide us steadily towards the Forcella del Picco (Birnlücke) until we reach our destination, the inviting Lahner Mountain Hut. After nearly two hours of walking through a beautiful natural setting, we arrive. Here, at an altitude of 1,979 metres at the foot of the Forcella del Picco, you can enjoy rustic mountain dishes. The return journey follows the same path.
For more experienced hikers climbing to the Brigata Tridentina Hut (Birnlückenhütte), which sits 400 metres higher up, the pleasant Lahner Hut serves merely as a halfway point to rest. The 2,911-metre-high Vetta d'Italia (Klockerkarkopf), which also towers above the hut, belongs to the High Tauern mountain range and represents one of the northernmost summits in South Tyrol.
