One of the most striking highlights in the Tures and Aurina Valleys is the Riva Waterfalls between Campo Tures and Riva di Tures. Historically, many visitors came simply to see the waterfalls, and only a few continued along the formerly hazardous path to the Toblburg castle ruins.
A castle chapel once stood at this higher elevation. The preservation and restoration of it in 1982 led to the creation of the St. Francis Path. This project also involved improving and redesigning the path to encourage reflection and prayer in natural surroundings. The trail is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, who frequently used the familiar Tau cross as a symbol of blessing.
The trail starts at the car park near the Waterfall bar in Cantuccio (Bad Winkel), on the outskirts of Campo Tures. It runs through the forest on the southern side of the Rio di Riva stream. Walkers pass the contemplation trail stations and the three large waterfalls before reaching the St. Francis and St. Clare Chapel. The final section just before the chapel involves a steep climb up some stairs.
Overall, the two-and-a-half-kilometre path in each direction is easy to moderately difficult. Due to its length, it is manageable for walkers with less mountain experience. The return journey follows the same route or, alternatively, path no. 2A on the opposite side of the valley. Families will also find several attractions at the waterfalls. These include the Marble Forest at the start of the hiking trail and the Fly-Line Waterfall, which glides swiftly through the trees.
