Santa Maddalena di Funes

The little Church of St. John in Ranui before the Odle peaks - the striking landmark of the Val di Funes

Welcome to Santa Maddalena di Funes at the end of the valley. The village is also popularly known as "in Berge", meaning "in the mountains". There is no shortage of churches here: Hundreds of visitors drive through Funes to the head of the valley on some days just to have a glimpse of the little Church of St. John in Ranui which stands in the middle of meadows.

The church itself is small, but the towering peaks of the Odle Group that rise above it are all the more impressive - a motif that has become a symbol of the Dolomites. The second church, St. Magdalene, is in the village centre and gave the village its name. According to legend, the Fopal stream washed ashore a miraculous image of Saint Mary Magdalene. Behind Santa Maddalena di Funes (St. Magdalena in Villnöss), just before the little Church of St. John in Ranui, a mountain road branches off to the left, leading up to the Zannes Mountain Hut and hikers' car park.

Several alpine huts are scattered across the meadows around the Zannes hikers' car park there. The parking fee contributes to the conservation of the Puez-Odle Nature Park. Hikes to the Gampen Hut, Odle Hut, and Glatsch Hut start from here, along with the Zannes Nature Experience Trail and the Adolf Munkel Path. The mighty Sass de Pütia attracts mountaineers. If you prefer to avoid great heights, you can visit the Dolomites UNESCO Info Point at the car park to see an impressive presentation on how the surrounding peaks and the entire Dolomites were formed.

The second centre, the Puez-Odle Visitor Centre, is located directly in Santa Maddalena. In winter, there is a small ski lift near the village: Sports groups appreciate it as it provides clearly defined pistes for training and races. The Col di Poma, a 2,422-metre high peak, and the Zannes Hut are ideal for snowshoe hiking, while the Gampen Hut is a popular spot for moonlight tobogganing. In addition, a number of cross-country ski trails wind through the winter landscape.
