Hike along the Ultimo Farm Trail

The Ultimo Farm Trail is a wonderful way to get a feel for the Val d'Ultimo and to see the farms that make the valley so special up close. The entire 18-kilometre theme trail runs from Pracupola to Santa Gertrude, the last village in the valley. Heading into the valley, the slopes are on the sunny side, while heading out they are on the shady side, known locally as the "Nederseit". Thus, the farm trail can be completed as a long day hike or in two stages. Today, we choose the longer section.

Ten kilometres and three and a half hours of walking lie ahead of us. We start at the Ultimo Valley Museum in San Nicoló and hike upwards past the church, following the "Via dei Masi" signs. An incline leads into the forest: Spring is in the air. With constant ups and downs, the path takes us over small bridges and past traditional paired farmhouses with their typical shingle roofs.

The path is always well signposted, making orientation easy. We reach the highest point of the hike at 1,468 metres above sea level after a third of the way. As we approach the head of the valley, the path gradually descends until we arrive in Santa Gertrude. After a short rest, we begin our return journey, which runs along the other side of the Valsura River, the shady side. This section is only free of snow in late spring. After about 20 minutes, we reach the Ancient Larch Trees.

On the opposite side of the valley, some farms seem to cling to the slopes. Gradually, we approach San Nicoló again, where our hike along the Ultimo Farm Trail ends. The culture, lifestyle, history and natural environment of the Val d'Ultimo come together uniquely along this path. It is highly recommended from late spring into autumn, and then again as a winter hike.
