EppanAppiano Advent

Experience the magic of the Advent season in Appiano on the Wine Road, including the nativity scenes at the cathedral in San Paolo

December in Appiano on the Wine Road features not only festive highlights but also numerous cultural events. The sprawling municipality, with its many small villages, transforms into a place where nativity scenes decorate the windows, art is created from "Dauben" (the old staves of wine barrels), and children eagerly await the arrival of Saint Nicholas.

Cribs at the San Paolo Cathedral:

Every year during Advent and Christmas - from late November to early January - handcrafted nativity scenes enchant the wine village of San Paolo Appiano in the Oltradige area. Every day from 4 pm, the warmly lit artworks around the cathedral invite you to take a contemplative stroll.

On the third weekend of Advent, you can visit the small Christmas Market "Handwerk am Dom" (Crafts at the Cathedral) in the rectory courtyard. On the third and fourth Sundays of Advent, the nativity scene association presents the Living Nativity in the village square, for which a stable is specially built in front of the church: It is known as the "Cathedral in the Countryside".

Christmas Market in San Michele:

Fragrant mulled wine, handmade unique items, and festive sounds characterise the small but charming Christmas Market in San Michele Appiano. A highlight for younger visitors is the Bobby Christmas Special and "Kids X-Mas", which takes place on the second weekend of Advent.

There are pony rides and drawing lessons, a Punch and Judy show, and llama and alpaca trekking. And of course, Saint Nicholas also pays a visit to the village. The Christmas Market is open on the Advent weekends as well as on December 8 and 24.

Wine Meets Christmas in Cornaiano:

From late November to early January, on weekends, the centre of the wine village of Cornaiano is decorated with unusual objects made from the old staves of wine barrels. You can see around 35 of these artworks while strolling through the village at "Wei(h)nachten in Girlan".

In addition, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the Cornaiano Advent is held in the Tannerhof, ensuring a cosy, festive atmosphere from 5 pm onwards. A special highlight of "Wine Meets Christmas in Cornaiano" is the Saint Nicholas and Krampus parade by the "Wildmonn-Tuifl".

Light and noise reduction:

EppanAppiano Advent aims to make a contribution by using light sources consciously and reducing sources of noise. In South Tyrol, there are also specific legal regulations for protection against light and noise pollution: For example, outdoor lighting must be dimmed or switched off in the evening, and noise-intensive activities must not exceed certain levels.

Getting to EppanAppiano Advent:

The individual villages are connected to each other and to the provincial capital, Bolzano, by bus. For example, the 131 bus line runs between Bolzano and San Michele Appiano, also stopping at the turn-off for San Paolo. The journey takes 20 minutes. Conveniently, the SouthTyrol Guest Pass allows you to use all public transport in South Tyrol free of charge.

Paid car parks are also available in the individual villages.
