Merano Christmas Market

Experience the traditional “Merano Christmas” along the Lungo Passirio Promenade, on Piazza Terme and in the botanical gardens

Merano is also the location of one of the 5 main Original South Tyrolean Christmas Markets: From late November to early January, the charming stalls present a variety of gift ideas and create a special Christmas atmosphere. At the stalls, you can enjoy culinary specialities such as mead, "Feuerzangenbowle" (a traditional German alcoholic drink for which a rum-soaked sugarloaf is set on fire and drips into mulled wine), or grilled buckwheat dumplings.

The five main locations:

  • Lungo Passirio Promenade in front of the Kurhaus Merano: the centre of the Christmas Market with the solidarity stand and the artisans' parlour
  • Piazza della Rena: Christmas village with space for workshops and a large chalet
  • in front of the Merano Thermal Baths: Christmas world with fir trees and an ice rink
  • Piazza Teatro: venue for the New Year's Eve party with high-energy music and dance hits
  • Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle: the inspiring setting for the LUMAGICA light show

Special highlights:

The Krampus and St Nicholas parade has been popular for years, as have the light installations and magical spaces in the thermal park, which create a world of wonder at "Silent Lights 2025 - Island of Dreams". For younger guests, there is a colourful programme in Goldy’s Cabin near the Ponte della Posta bridge, the home of the "Merano Christmas" mascot.

LUMAGICA light show:

For the third time since opening over two decades ago, the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle are opening their gates in winter for the LUMAGICA light park. Under the motto "Sissi's journey around the world", you can expect artistic light installations and interactive elements.

Sustainability at the Merano Christmas Market:

Merano is the location of one of the 5 main Original South Tyrolean Christmas Markets and is a Green Event, planned and carried out according to ecological criteria. The main focus is on the careful use of resources, environmentally friendly transport, waste management, the involvement of local clubs and groups, and the use of seasonal products.

The 2025 edition is complemented by the sustainable advent calendar with artisan chocolate in 12 flavours. This project by the Merano Tourist Board and 58chocolate is produced in a limited edition and sold exclusively at the Merano Tourist Board Infopoint and at 58chocolate.

Getting to the Christmas Market:

A competition, where you can win a basket of South Tyrolean specialities, provides an incentive to travel to the Christmas market by train. From the Merano station, the Lungo Passirio Promenade can be reached in about 10 minutes on foot. The N13 night bus line, as well as the public bus during the day, also connects the town centre with the botanical gardens and the light show.

Those travelling with the SouthTyrol Guest Pass can use all public buses and trains throughout South Tyrol. The pay-and-display car parks are called Merano Thermal Baths, Lagundo Winery, Karl Wolf in Via Verdi, Minigolf in Via Innerhofer, and Parking Plaza in Via Goethe. Additionally, there are free parking spaces at the Piazzale Prader opposite the Merano train station.
