The city of Merano hosts one of the five Original South-Tyrolean Christmas markets which have all been awarded the Green Event certificate. From the end of November to early January the Passeggiata Lungo Passirio, the Kurhaus, the Passirio River in front of Merano Thermal Baths on the opposite side turns into a stunning winter world where you can find a huge variety of ideas for presents. At the food stalls you can taste honey wine, "Feuerzangbowle" (a typical German alcoholic beverage), roasted buckwheat dumplings and much more. Other stalls sell clothes, wooden and ceramic products and jewellery.
Events you shouldn't miss are the Santa Claus and "Krampus" parades, as well as the light installations and magical rooms in the Parco delle Terme which turn into a fantastic world during the event "Silent Lights". On 31st December you can celebrate New Year's Eve with a DJ in Piazza del Teatro or listen to live music in Corso Libertà Superiore. Little guests can participate in a rich entertaining programme in the house of Goldy, the home of the Merano Christmas Market's mascot. The Merano Christmas Market takes place also in other spots in and outside Merano's historic centre.
For the second time since their inauguration, the Gardens of the Trauttmansdorff Castle host the light park LUMAGICA which can be visited during the winter months. The comprehensive programme of the Merano Christmas Markets is completed by the Casa della Solidarietà (Charity house), guided tours of the city with lanterns and guided tours in the Kurhaus.
