San Cipriano

S. Cipriano, which is part of the municipality of Tires, is a popular starting point for hikes.

The little village of S. Cipriano is located at 1,071 m asl and is located 3 km from the main village of Tires. The original mountain village is a perfect starting point for walks and mountaineering in the Dolomites and the Scilar-Catinaccio nature park.

Worth visiting is the little S. Cipriano church, which was name-giving for the village. Consecrated to the Saints Cyprian and Justina von Antiochia, it was constructed in the 13th century in late-Romanesque style. The outer façade of the church shows a wall painting (17th century) telling the legend of the saving of the so-called “Platzlinerwiese“ pasture: when God threw lightnings out of the sky onto the pasture, Cipriano and Justina protected this piece of land with their coats. By the way, according to an ancient telling, the first settlements in this area were not located in the main village of Tires, but in S. Cipriano.

Our tip: a trip to the alpine pasture of “Proa” above S. Cipriano. There is by the way no better place to watch the impressive alpine glow at sundown.
