Winter hike to the Messnerjoch Mountain Hut

This short and easy walking tour through the winter forest is recommended also to all those, who don’t want or cannot manage more demanding hikes

Well, to be honest, the term "hike" is little short of an exaggeration for this easy tour in the beautiful countryside beneath the Catinaccio Group. Within 30 to 45 minutes, the destination is reached and the path is wide and levelled. About 200 m in height have to be managed along approx. 2 km of distance. Starting point is the parking space at the Passo Nigra mountain pass.

It is located above the village of Carezza where we follow the marker no. 1 which leads us straight to our destination in the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park. The road proceeds slightly uphill through the conifer forest and reaches the open landscape with meadows at the edge of the slope of the Carezza Dolomites Ski Area between the Fronza alle Coronelle Mountain Hut and the Frommer Hut (Frommeralm). From here there are only few more minutes’ walk to the Messnerjoch-Hütte.

The mountain hut with its nice panoramic terrace offers a gorgeous view on Mt. Latemar, Mt. Corno Nero, Mt. Corno Bianco and the Catinaccio Group as well as South Tyrolean delicacies. Notice: The data indicated refer to the entire route, including return trip, on foot.
