Winter hike at the foot of Mount Catinaccio

From the Costalunga Pass to the Pearl Path - a short winter walk on the south west slopes of the Catinaccio Massif

At the beginning of December we do our first winter walking tour for this season. At the Passo di Costalunga (top of the pass at 1,753 m a.s.l.) above the village of Carezza (Karersee Dorf), we follow the signpost no. 548, leading us the way across the forest towards the Catinaccio Group, the legendary world of King Laurin and his Rose Garden. In the fresh snow, it is not really easy to follow the path. It gets much easier once we reached the forested road, which is easily perceivable.

By following the signs "Roda di Vael" we finally reach the three wooden mountain huts known as "Tre Baite" in Italian, or "Drei Schupfen" in German. What a pity that today the sun does not show her face today and that fog blocks our view of the Val di Fassa valley.

The snow-capped landscape is amazing, anyway. Now we walk back a short section of the path, until we come to see the signpost "Perlenweg" (Pearl Trail), which we follow up to the altitude of the Masaré Mountain Hut at 2,015 m a.s.l. From this point we descent along the blue slope until we reach the path taking us back to the pass. The last section of the track follows the asphalt road.
