Winter hike from Monte Pana to Saltria

This winter hike leads you from the Monte Pana near Santa Cristina to the snow-covered Alpe di Siusi in about 14 km distance.

The Monte Pana near Santa Cristina in the Val Gardena valley (St. Christina in Gröden) is popular for its cross-country-skiing resort in winter time. Mount Pana also connects Santa Cristina and the Alpe di Siusi. Either you go up by car (chargeable parking space) or you take the chairlift from the village. And the walk starts! We take the path no. 30 and walk in the shadow of the impressive Sassolungo. We find the path nearly without snow and we get on fast.

Magic snowy winter landscapes, we walk through the woods of the Confinböden, the path also crosses a few cross-country-ski-runs. After a walk of one hour the wood opens and we have an amazing view to the snow-covered Alpe di Siusi. Mt. Sasso Piatto, the Denti di Terra Rossa rock formations and mighty Mt. Sciliar form a magnificent backdrop behind wide snowfields. Now the path leads downhill to Saltria, where we find a few restaurants and huts to have a rest.

From here on we start our way back on a different route. We take the path no. 18, after a short distance of asphalt-road we walk on a wide snow-covered path. The snow of the last weeks offers us a magic winter-landscape – the frozen creek-bed, the snowy conifer-forest and many marks of different wild animals. Only the light wind is cutting the deep silence. After a short part downhill now a rise follows. In the end we find the turnoff to our way no. 30 A which leads us back to Monte Pana. First we take this path, later on the way leads us along the cross-country-ski-runs back to our starting point above Santa Cristina.
