Passing the Auerberg Hut in the eponymous valley, we reach the Seefeld Mountain Hut at 2,100 metres above sea level

The Val d'Ora branches off from the Val d'Ultimo at San Nicoló and stretches up to the peaks of the Maddalene Mountain Chain. Autumn is already knocking at the door as we set off on our hike through the Val d'Ora: The first snowfalls have briefly made it below the 2,000-metre mark.
In the valley floor of the Val d'Ultimo, near the Nördenwies and Grünhaus farms, we follow the forest road towards the mountain hut. A woodland path slightly shortens the first section of the route. We reach the Auerberg Hut at an altitude of 1,640 metres after just under an hour. From here, the route continues upwards through the Val d'Ora, or Auerbergtal.
At around 1,800 metres above sea level, the path becomes steeper and the terrain changes. Instead of the forest road, we now follow a partly paved mule track that runs along the rock face on the eastern side of the valley. Emerging from the gorge, we reach the tree line, where a natural landscape of wet meadows expands before us. This is where the Seefeld Hut is located.
Only about 50 vertical metres separate us from Lake Seefeld at an altitude of 2,169 metres. It sits in the middle of a raised bog, surrounded by flowering grassy slopes and the peaks of the Maddalene Mountain Chain above. The Cima Olmi, Cima Seefeld, Stübele and Monte Faggiola frame the area. The route back down to San Nicoló follows the same path, though we naturally treat ourselves to a pleasant stop at the Auerberg Hut, the only refreshment stop along the way.
