Summit tour to the Schenòn del Latemar

An expert mountain tour leads from the Passo di Costalunga to the Dolomite summit of the Schenón del Latemar

Sure-footedness, a head for heights, mountain experience, stamina - we have set ourselves a big challenge for this July day. It is recommended to be accompanied by a mountain guide, who knows the local conditions best, is professionally trained and can show you a spot or two that not everyone knows. We start the adventure to the Schenón del Latemar at the Passo di Costalunga in the Val d'Ega: The crossing near Carezza leads from South Tyrol into the Val di Fassa in Trentino.

We cover the entire distance on foot - alternatively, the first 500 metres of altitude could be covered with the Oberholz Chairlift from Obereggen. Through a forest, we follow trail no. 17 to the Latemar Meadows and then proceed along a narrow panoramic path to below the Latemar Towers, which rise 2,000 metres into the sky. At the fork at an altitude of just under 2,000 metres, we keep right: If we were to follow the path further, we would reach Moena in the Val di Fassa.

After that, the ascent becomes steeper, the loose stones somewhat tiresome and the sections more exposed: After around two hours we meet trail no. 18, on which we will also descend. Involving some scrambling, we finally reach the saddle of the Forcella Piccola del Latemar at 2,526 metres. The summit of the Schenón del Latemar, one of the most demanding destinations in the Latemar Group, lies almost another 300 metres of altitude and one hour's walking time above us.

Then follows the last part through stony and exposed terrain: unsecured climbing sections up to the summit. Next to the slender summit cross we pause, the world at our feet. The light reef limestones of the former primeval ocean, which make up the Latemar, are criss-crossed by dark strips of volcanic rock. The Dolomites with the Lagorai and Pala Groups, the Marmolada - the highest peak of the Dolomites -, the legendary Catinaccio and Mt. Sciliar can be seen. We return along the same path. Please avoid the tour in wet or icy conditions!
