Over two long weekends in Advent - from November 28 to 30 and from December 5 to 8 - Tyrol Castle transforms into an atmospheric Christmas wonderland. Where visitors normally admire the collections of the South Tyrolean Museum of Culture and Provincial History, on the 1st and 2nd weekends of Advent, everything revolves around crafts, music and moments of quiet reflection.
The three main locations:
- Castle courtyard: stalls with gift ideas and delicious treats for the palate
- Knight's Hall: the setting for Bobby's live shows and an Advent concert
- Castle chapel: Nativity scene exhibition, Advent devotion with a blessing of the nativity scenes
The entertainment programme:
Adult visitors can admire traditional crafts and listen to musical performances. Culinary delights in the courtyard will satisfy your appetite: Live music accompanies the hot drinks and sweet treats.
The group "Brennet Liab" will perform, as will the Tirolo hunting horn blowers, the Burgraviato Alphorn players, the "Merano Horn Ensemble" and the Tirolo youth brass band. In the castle chapel, you can also admire homemade nativity scenes.
For the children:
The Tyrolean Advent in the Castle, organised by the Tirolo Tourist Office in collaboration with the South Tyrolean Museum of Culture and Provincial History, also has plenty for younger guests: A craft workshop and the Bobby Live Show in the Knight's Hall provide entertainment.
Also on the programme is a visit from the "Spronser Tuifl" Krampus figures.
Ice rink in Tirolo village:
Also part of the Tyrol Castle Advent programme: a small ice rink is open until the beginning of February at the tennis courts to the right of the main road of Tirolo village, a short distance from the Advent in the Castle itself. Weather permitting, it is open every day except Monday.
Getting to the Tyrolean Advent in the Castle:
From Merano, Tirolo village is easily accessible by bus: Additional bus services run on Sundays and public holidays from the bus stop of the Merano Thermal Baths on the Via Piave road to the centre of Tirolo village. There are also a few pay-and-display car parks in the village centre.
The subsequent 20 to 30-minute walk to the castle can only be done on foot. The road is closed to traffic. Weather permitting, carriage rides are available every half hour along the Via del Castello road, stopping about 300 metres from the castle entrance. They depart from the church square.
