Hike to the St. Andrew Chapel near Antlas

The old Emperor Path leads from the Valle Isarco valley up to the sunny slopes of the Renon: On a beautiful autumn day we visit the Church of St. Andrew and the Zunerhof inn in the hamlet of Antlas.

Our little hike from the Valle Isarco valley up to the Chestnut Path (Kastanienweg, in German) starts in Campodazzo (parking facilities and bus connection). On the Via Brennero road we pass the information board of the Kaiserweg path. We will follow this path (no. 9) for a while. It leads first past vineyards, then we will walk steeply uphill through a dense deciduous forest.

Partly the old stone paving is still preserved (caution: can be slippery). On the sunny rocky slope above the Valle Isarco we climb further and further up until we reach the meadows of Antlas. The small hamlet of Antlas is located below Longostagno at about 750 m a.s.l. We follow the road towards north to the Zunerhof, a historic farmhouse from the 12th century, which is now also a popular inn. We walk even further to the St. Andrew Church.

The small church, which is exposed on a hill, dates back to the 14th century. Recently a fresco cycle with the Saints Christophorus, Margarethe, Stephanus and Laurentius was uncovered here. A special feature is the flag box with pictures of St. Andrew. After a comfortable stop at the Zunerhof inn, we return to the valley later along the same route.
