The Urlesteig trail in the Reinswald hiking area is named after the “Urlelockn”, two small ponds near San Martino

Summer in the mountains of San Martino (Reinswald) is a great experience. The valley station of the cable car is already at an altitude of 1,570 metres. Our walk starts at the Pichlberg mountain station, and the view of the surrounding mountains is highly impressive right from the start. The children are already playing on the playground at the Pichlberg restaurant next to the station.
The Urlesteig features six separate sections, and each is dedicated to a specific theme. The longer route leads from the mountain station to the Getrum Hut (History & Culture, 60 minutes). It then follows a wide curve to the hairpins (Plants, 60 minutes), the mills of San Martino (Forces of Nature, 60 minutes), and the valley station (Alpine Meadow, 25 minutes).
We choose the shorter route: The wide path leads past water wheels up to the Pfnatsch Mountain Hut at an altitude of 2,078 metres. This hut serves regional delicacies and traditional home cooking from the Val Sarentino. We walk for 20 minutes on this section, which is dedicated to the theme of water. Above the hut, there is a pond with a raft, which is great fun for the children!
The path then goes slightly downhill, and the second stage covers the theme of animals. We pass stations such as "Adder", "Capercaillie", and "Alpine Chough". Each station consists of a log with a carved animal and plenty of interesting information. After half an hour, we reach the Sunnolm Mountain Hut, where we treat ourselves to an ice cream.
The "Urlelockn" are located below the hut, and this is followed by the descent to San Martino. Although we have been walking for half the day, the children manage well. Thanks to the various stations and games, there is always something new to discover, turning the walk into an adventure. After almost two hours of pure walking time, we arrive at the valley station.
