Walk on the Freud Promenade to Collalbo

In the summer of 1911, Sigmund Freud spent his holiday with his wife Martha, his six children, and his sister-in-law Minna at the Hotel Bemelmans-Post in Collalbo. He also celebrated his silver wedding anniversary here on September 14. Today, a walking path leads from Soprabolzano via Stella to Collalbo and back - or vice versa - taking about two hours.

To mark his 150th birthday, the existing path no. 35 was refurbished in 2006 and dedicated to Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis. Along the route, 13 benches provide places to rest, each featuring aphorisms from Freud's writings. We start on a lovely summer day and park in Soprabolzano. From here, we set off to explore the Freud Promenade heading towards Collalbo.

We take our toddler with us in his pushchair. Especially in summer, when temperatures in the Bolzano basin rise significantly, it is pleasantly cool up here on the Renon. A few scattered houses, some of them old and beautiful, line the path. Nature is in full abundance, showing off ripe elderberries, raspberries, and apricots. The Sciliar and the Catinaccio lie ahead of us.

We can also make out the peaks of the Punta Santner and Punta Euringer. At the end of the gravel track, the path turns left and then immediately right again, merging into a forest trail. After a short stretch through the woods, we arrive in Collalbo and only need to decide where to treat ourselves to some refreshments. We gladly make such decisions! We return along the same path.

If you don't want to take the car: The journey on the Renon Cable Car is a special experience. The cable car, which has been in operation since May 2009, runs every four minutes between the town centre of Bolzano and Soprabolzano, where the Freud Promenade begins and ends.
