Autumn hike in the Valdurna Valley

The Valdurna Valley is the longest side valley of Val Sarentino: Our tour follows the western slopes to the blue waters of Lake Valdurna

This October excursion begins near Boscoriva in the Valle di Valdurna, where the path to the Agrathof farm branches off on the western side of the valley road. We first walk up the paved path to the farm and then take the forest road towards the woods. This merges into hiking trail no. 4, which we follow northwards towards the village of Valdurna (Durnholz).

The route begins as a gravel track, but the signs later guide us onto a forest path. It runs gently up and down at an altitude between 1,500 and 1,600 metres, crossing forests and meadows and passing by farms. Where the woods open up, we can see the opposite side of the valley: Colourful larches and deciduous trees characterise the landscape. After a distance of ten kilometres, we reach Valdurna: The small village is located on a hill above the beautiful Lake Valdurna.

The Church of St. Nicholas is well worth a visit for its old cycle of frescoes, and there is also a rest point. To finish, we follow the path around Lake Valdurna for a short distance. It is also possible to walk the entire way around it: This full circuit of the triangular lake takes one hour.

We then return comfortably to our starting point on the public bus that travels from Valdurna towards Sarentino village. This hike through the beautiful landscape of the Valdurna Valley is classified as moderately difficult. It is generally easy, but there is a long uphill section to tackle at the beginning. In addition, surefootedness is required on a few short stretches.
